Exercising Emotional Intelligence in Relationships

Whether you are in a relationship, dating or thinking about getting back out there, one of the most common advice you will receive is “be yourself”. While this is great advice, it is important to exercise Emotional Intelligence to ensure that you are taking the other person’s feelings into consideration when communicating with each other. It’s about creating awareness.

Emotional intelligence refers to the ability to understand and manage one's own emotions as well as effectively recognize and empathize with the emotions of others. It goes beyond simple self-awareness and extends to having a deep understanding of how emotions impact actions, relationships, and overall well-being.

Possessing emotional intelligence entails being able to regulate and control one's emotions, respond appropriately to various social cues, and navigate through conflicts and challenges with tact and empathy. Individuals with high emotional intelligence are often skilled at building and maintaining healthy relationships, displaying empathy, practicing active listening, and adapting to differing perspectives. Moreover, they are adept at managing stress, expressing themselves constructively, and making thoughtful decisions based on a balance of logic and emotional consideration. Ultimately, emotional intelligence is a vital attribute that cultivates strong bonds, promotes personal growth, and enhances social interactions.

Take a deep breath and get your thoughts together.

Emotional intelligence plays a vital role in fostering healthy and fulfilling relationships. By honing this skill, individuals develop a deeper understanding and empathy towards their partners, enabling them to navigate complex emotions and conflicts more effectively. In a relationship, emotional intelligence allows individuals to recognize and regulate their own emotions while also being attuned to their partner's feelings. This self-awareness and empathetic response pave the way for open and honest communication, fostering trust and intimacy.

Furthermore, emotional intelligence helps in comprehending and validating each other's experiences, strengthening the bond and creating a safe space where emotions can be shared and processed together. Its presence brings empathy, understanding, and resilience, becoming a cornerstone for cultivating strong, nurturing relationships.

Using Emotional Intelligence in relationships:

To effectively incorporate Emotional Intelligence in relationships, one of the most important actions to take is to conduct a self-assessment to become aware of how you have handled situations with your friends, partner or business associate(s). It helps you to better understand how you handle yourself in relationships as well as how you deal with conflicts.

Here are some actions you can take to help you to become more aware of your own personality and aspects of it that could negatively affect your current and future relationships:

  1. Understand how you typically respond when you disagree with another person’s actions of point of view. Are you responding based on emotion or are you trying to understand where the other person is coming from?

  2. Maintain a positive outlook and be respectful of the other person’s feelings.

  3. Adjust your tone of voice as needed in the situation; Maintain a neutral tone.

  4. Be aware of your body language.

  5. Exercise proper listening skills and learn how to compromise. You don’t always need to have the last word.

  6. Take the time to show appreciation for the other person; Highlight their best traits.
